Full Mouth Rehabilitation

Full Mouth Rehabilitation

Full mouth reconstruction, also known as full mouth rehabilitation or full mouth restoration is a comprehensive form of dental treatment which could combine all dental specialties to reconstruct and restore all the damaged teeth in both upper and lower jaws.

The need for a full mouth reconstruction may arise for the following reasons:

  • Several or many missing teeth that require replacement
  • Many weakened teeth that require protection in the form of crowns to prevent the risk of fracture or further damage to the teeth
  • Teeth that have become severely worn as a result of long-term acid erosion (foods, beverages, acid reflux) or tooth grinding
  • Ongoing complaints of jaw, muscle and headache pain requiring adjustments to the bite (occlusion)

Typically, the treatment involves the application of white fillings, dental bridges, Dental Implants, crowns and veneers to multiple damaged teeth in the mouth.

An extensive examination is required involving;

  • Detailed records of the mouth – including X-rays, photographs, study models and impressions of the upper and lower teeth – will be taken to ensure that nothing important is missed.
  • Periodontal issues – to ensure that the newly-reconstructed teeth have a firm foundation and do not move around, grafting soft tissue or bone grafting to build up the jaw bone and gums for dental implants may be required.
  • Aesthetics – namely the colour, shape, size and proportion of the teeth will be a major consideration throughout your treatment– and whether or not you have a stable bite is important when deciding if we should proceed with full mouth reconstruction.

When all the relevant information has been gathered, we will draw up a written treatment plan detailing how we intend to go about correcting all of the mouth-related complaints that you have. We will also provide you with a written consent form that will detail your treatment at length.

Once full mouth rehabilitation treatment is complete, those who have opted for reconstruction will typically find the appearance of their teeth is far better, while their functionality and overall comfort should also have greatly improved.

Furthermore, the work could have a number of less obvious health benefits. For instance, the ability to chew more effectively means that food can be more easily digested as it travels through the body, helping you to make the most of your meals' nutritional elements. In this way, a healthy mouth can help to enhance the body, allowing patients who have undergone full mouth reconstruction work to gain a new, positive outlook on life.
